Beau

3.jpg

Beau continues to grow. I have no idea what he weighs now, but it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if he’s around 115 now. He is so heavy-boned. He seems to have completely skipped that gangly puppy stage in his life. As close as I can measure, he’s 25-inches at the withers now. I may take him with me to PetSmart over the weekend and put him on the scales. He also continues to eat as if he hasn’t been fed in a day. The food just vanishes.
MB4.jpg

I continue to be amazed at his intelligence, but what really amazes me is his sensitivity to my moods or actions. As an example, I was doing some polishing on some old cabinet hardware yesterday, using my Dremel tool and a small abrasive wheel. Beau and Annie were laying on the kitchen floor, watching me. The tool slipped and sort of bit into a finger…I said a few choice words in a loud voice. Annie paid it no mind, but Beau promptly got up, and looking at me over his shoulder, walked into another room and lay down. It really seems to affect him if I’m unhappy or angry. What’s so strange about it is that although I’m never angry at him (even when he’s gnawing on the woodwork), he seems to think it’s his fault I’m angry or unhappy about something, and it seems to really bother him.

Beau loves to ride in the back of the 4Runner. If I so much as open a door in it when we’re out back, or lower the tailgate window, he starts running around, barking and whining because he thinks we’re going somewhere. Annie can jump up into it, but Beau’s so heavy, he can’t. So he stands up with his paws on the tailgate, and I boost him on up into it. Problem is, when we get back from wherever we’ve been, he doesn’t want to get out. He just sits or lays there, looking at me. So I kind of have to coax him to the edge of the tailgate so I can pick him up and lift him down. I don’t let him jump out of it. It’s too high, and he’s too heavy.

I’m also amazed at how fast he is when he’s after something…chasing a ball, maybe. Annie is really fast, but she only weighs about 75 pounds. But Beau can get from one side of the yard to the other in just seconds, usually beating her to the ball. And he doesn’t throw either of his hind legs out to the side when running, either. It’s just this powerful, driving motion propelling him forward. For an 11-month-old puppy, he can be a bit intimidating to strangers…not agressive or threatening, just because of his size I guess. So far, he has not met anyone who comes to visit that he doesn’t like.

Annie will usually stay wherever she is in the house when I get up to go to another room, but Beau will follow me everywhere I go in here. Keeping an eye on me, I guess. Annie’s napping in the den right now, but Beau is right here beside me as I write this. My Rottweiler shadow. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Someone could come to the door and offer me thousands of dollars for him, and I’d say sorry, you’ve come to the wrong house.

It has been an incredibly fast eleven months with him. He’s gone from that little fur ball puppy to a real dog in such a seemingly short time.

I hope you are well, and that all the dogs are healthy and happy. Give Madera an ear scratch for me. A few photos are attached/included.

Enjoy your weekend.

Silver Hill's Lindiwe

Cathy
Just wanted to let you know that Nadia (Silver Hill’s Lindiwe) passed her TD test last weeked. She left all of her diva behavior at home and worked like a champ despite the fields being under water from all the rain we’ve been having and being slightly handler disabled (I do all my own tracking training and handling). We couldnt be more proud of her.

This is a copy of her portion of the test write up from the test secretary. We drew the third track of the day and it took her 5 minutes from start flag to finish article.

3rd was a rottie bitch (club member) with a stunning start, and worked methodically and steady right through the whole track, she took her turns like a quarter horse and she also urged her owner to pick up the pace so she could get to the glove…beautiful line handling the whole way and YES, another PASS!!!

I have also attached a picture of nadia and i with the judges and her ribbon.
We start training for her TDX and VST tests next week.

Now all we need is that last major so she can finish in the breed ring.

Looking for older dog - female looking for a home

Hi, everyone.

There is an older man looking for an older male dog. If you know of a good tempered, house trained male please email fbisby@nc.rr.com

Also:

There is an approximately 3 year old female named Tiffany at the Franklin County Humane Society in Rocky Mount, VA. This facility is located in southern VA. Tiffany was picked up as a stray in early August. She is very sweet with all humans she has encountered while at the shelter and is quick to offer her belly for a rub. Tiffany is current on all vaccinations, heartworm negative, and spayed. Her picture is on Petfinder as well as all the contact information for the facility. Anita Scott (rescue co-ordinator for FCHS) has been trying to find a home or a rescue to take Tiffany.

Tiffany will need help with crate training/housebreaking skills. Here’s a link to her photo and contact details. Thank you for considering Tiffany!

2 yr old female

From Maureen in NY: I just got back a two year old spayed bitch due to allergies in the family. She was raised with a toddler, is good with all people and other dogs. She completed several levels of obedience and loves to work. She is not huge and would be great for agility if someone were interested in that. For those of you who know my dogs, she is a sister to Journey and Boo, (Tilly X Murphy). Very loving, coming from a home where she was the only dog and very spoiled. I feel so bad for her if anyone knows anybody, please feel free to forward this along to them.

Rescues available

They can contact me at

URGENT, Need Foster home or rescue to pull him. Located in Chatham County Shelter as of 10-19-2011. Adult Male intact Rottweiler, shelter staff said he is a good weight. Currently unknown medical history. If I pull him, he will be checked for heartworms, and updated on all shots, and microchipped before released to any foster care. Can make arrangements for neutering too. Right now the important thing is get him into foster care and out of the shelter. He is currently on ‘Stray Hold’, being that he was picked up as a stray on Monday October 17th, they will keep him until Monday October 24 to find his owner. After they release him , his situation will be day by day to being euthanized dependng on space. They would not guarantee how many days he can be held. I plan to visit him and do a Temperment evaluation Saturday October 22. If he is placeable, we will move forward with a foster home on Monday. I would like to see him out of there on Monday to be sure he will not be put down. I need a foster home waiting on Monday October 24. I have no where to house him for one night right now. We do not know his interest in children, cats, other dogs etc. Again I hope to evaluate him on Saturday. The shelter said he is friendly but appears a touch shy or just uncomfortable in his surroundings. He has not offered to growl or show any kind of aggression to anyone. She said he is a very very beautiful Boy. Updates will follow as I know more.

I have a picture of Trixie if you can put her on your news . Bo is still on medical hold. I am the contact actually.

a writeup:
I my name is Trixie, I was running free but starving with my Friend Bo ( he was rescued too) in the southern part of Randolph County when this nice lady let me in her fenced yard and called a rescue group to help me. I am about 2 years old, spayed, microchipped, up to date on all shots and heartworm negative. I am ready to go to my forever home. I could still gain a few pounds but am healthy and happy. I still need help in my housetraining but I am told by those who meet me I am the sweetest thing and give good hugs and kisses. I am small, and delicate but very bouncy and friendly. I adore children and so far have shown no interest in cats. I need a fenced yard of course. My adoption fee is $125 payable to Pug Rescue of NC……. who saved me.

Jade is now Can Ch. SilverHills Zulu Princess RN

Hi,

Sending a quick message to say we’re thrilled to shared Jade earned her Rally Novice title today :) This time with a score of 93 earning us a 3rd place.
Jade is now Can Ch. SilverHills Zulu Princess RN. We moved her up to Advanced this afternoon and she would have Q’d except she wanted no part of the high jump. Everything else she did really well on! Oh, well….we have until next year to perfect some of these finer points.

Take care,
Dale

River babies are here! finally. And vaccination notes.

River had 2 females born last night. Both are doing well this morning! I, on the other hand need sleep.

And a new guideline based on titers and explained in layman terms - (click here)
Reading through it, it is recommended that adult Multi-way vaccines should not be given to puppies as they contain Leptospira which should be given only to dogs older than 12 weeks of age. Revaccination is recommended annually, but only for dogs with reasonable risk of exposure. Plus they note Vaccination should be based on known geographic occurrence/prevalence and exposure risk of the individual dog.
Also, in short the website linked above summarizes:

The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) Canine Vaccination Task Force has issued updated vaccination guidelines for 2011.
A highlight of the new guidelines: The three non-rabies core vaccines (distemper, parvo and adenovirus) are now recommended every 3 years instead of annually.
Another highlight: The task force acknowledges that distemper and parvo vaccines provide immunity for at least 5 years and the adenovirus vaccine for at least 7 years.
Learn the vaccine protocol Dr. Becker and Dr. Ronald Schultz follow.
